Bauhaus Meets Art Déco

The Sedius model combines two contrasting design philosophies into a watch with a unique character.

The Bauhaus style represents minimalist design and functionality, while the Art Déco style embodies elegance, decorative elements and sensuality. These are two design principles that, by definition, should be at odds with each other. With the new Sedius timepiece, STERNGLAS manages to harmoniously unite the two styles.

Worry-free thanks to sapphire crystal

We only use sapphire crystal for our timepieces. This type of watch glass is usually found in the luxury watch market.

For a perfect view of the dial, we apply a double anti-reflective coating to the sapphire crystal.

What exactly is sapphire crystal?

Sapphire is the third hardest transparent material in the world - after diamond and moissanite.

Curved sapphire crystal not only looks good, it makes the durable watch crystal even more resistant.

This makes it virtually impossible for your sapphire crystal watch to get scratched in everyday life.

A Design inspired by historical models

The Sedius features a classic sector dial that reflects the duality of these two styles. The dial itself is a fusion of Art Déco and Bauhaus principles: Multiple concentric circles are divided into the named sectors by lines. The centre of the dial remains unobstructed and distinctly separated.

This division ensures functional clarity and enables effortless readability. For this reason, sector dials are sometimes referred to as "scientific dials" or "railroad dials."

Rich in detail, both inside and out

The special feature of the Sedius is the analogue quartz movement VH31 from Seiko, which retains the reliability of a quartz watch but at the same time has a sweeping second hand.

The 40 mm case made of robust, polished 316L stainless steel encloses a satined, white-silver dial with a circular brushing. The new blue leaf hands and the day/night engraving on the case back create a beautiful contrast while playing with the Bauhaus and Art Déco connection.

What our customers say about us

Why we make Bauhaus watches?

In your search for a classic and durable watch, you are faced with 2 alternatives today:

1. you can buy a watch from a luxury manufacturer for a very high price, or
2. a watch from a trendy brand whose quality is as short-lived as the trend that made the brand popular.

Moin! I'm Dustin Fontaine, Founder of STERNGLAS...

When I worked in a watch manufactory during my school days and was looking for a watch for myself, I realised that there would have to be a 3rd alternative.

3. Since 2016, we have been breaking new ground and developing timeless Bauhaus-style watches that will outlive trends and continue to give pleasure for many years to come. And all that at a fair price.

In the meantime, over 53,000 watch lovers are convinced of our mission and our watch design has received several awards.

Seiko VH31 Quartz Movement with Sweeping Seconds

The duality of Bauhaus and Art Deco is also evident in the movement: the special feature of the Sedius is, of course, the VH31 quartz movement from Seiko, which retains the reliability of a quartz watch, but at the same time has a sweeping seconds function like that of an automatic watch. This movement is also called a mecha-quartz movement.

For this purpose, the stepping motor of the quartz movement was modified so that it beats with 4 beats per second (2Hz).

The movement has a battery life of up to 24 months and a rate accuracy of ± 15 seconds per month.

Heritage leather strap with aligator embossing

The cowhide strap with aligator embossing sets off the dial perfectly on any wrist.

The leather strap comes from a Bavarian manufacturer. To preserve the natural feel of the leather, we work primarily with tanned rather than lacquered straps. This complex tanning process makes each leather strap unique and handcrafted.

Easy strap change without tools

Thanks to the quick-change system, you can give your timepiece a new look in just 10 seconds:

1 — Slide the pin of the spring bar inwards.

2 — Pull the strap off the watch.

3 — Put on a new strap by sliding the pin inwards again and inserting the spring bar one after the other into the holes in the case.

The Sedius in the press

"Two variants of the Sedius are available, each with a surprisingly distinct character. The case lines, dial layout, and hand shapes are the same on both. However, independent color combinations on each make more of a difference than I would have expected. What both watches share — and very successfully so — is the well-balanced dial. Experience tells me that a 40mm “all-dial” watch will look larger than it actually is.

The 12 outer dashes, the minute track (subdivided into four ticks to match the beating of the meca-quartz movement), and the sectors housing the four numerals at the cardinal points are all cleverly proportioned. The dial is neither too busy nor too large or sparse."
